photographer, was an operator at Stewart & Co., Bourke Street, and a colleague of Tom Roberts 's when he worked there. Barrie became a partner of Stewart’s, then owner of the company in 1890. He supposedly invited Roberts to return to Melbourne in 1885 to help with studio posing, lighting and backgrounds – R. worked 3 days a week for £3.
