Painter, born New Zealand and came to Australia with his family as a child. They named their Australian house Gisborne after the place of Elioth’s birth. In 1930 Gruner returned to New Zealand for a lengthy stay. His paintings, however, were rarely seen there until they toured in a group show in 1964.

Gruner painted two oils offered by Bridget McDonnell Gallery, Carlton in Early Australian Painters , catalogue of exhibition 25 May-15 June 2001 (cats 14, 15 ill.): From the Artist’s Camp in the Blue Mountains 1914 and Misty Morning (estate of Clarice Thomas, youngest daughter of John Young, co-founder of Sydney’s Macquarie Galleries in 1925).
