He came to Melbourne at the age of two and as a teenager worked in a Melbourne photographic studio before becoming a compositor at Tarnagulla, Victoria. Keartland joined the Melbourne Age in 1871 and was still working there as a compositor in June 1897 when he was interviewed by the Australian Typographical Journal .
