The artist was probably the Hailes who showed Sisters (medium unspecified) at the 1859 exhibition of the South Australian Society of Arts. He/she may be connected with Nathaniel Hailes (1802-79), founder and editor of the Adelaide Free Press , and his wife Eliza, née Rutt.
