art student, exhibited a pen and ink study of an old woman’s head in the 4th annual exhibition of the NSW Academy of Art at Sydney in 1875, being listed as 'D’Arcy, W. – Amateur – Queensland’ (cat. 153). The Sydney Mail (3 April 1875) commented that 'A Study – an old woman’s head by Mr. W. D’Arcy of Queensland, is nicely executed in pen and ink’. The same study was shown at the Agricultural Society of NSW’s Metropolitan Intercolonial Exhibition in 1875 (cat.150) and, despite being labelled a copy, was commended by the art judges E. L. Montefiore and Eccleston du Faur . The artist was now listed as 'N.’ D’Arcy, but was evidently confused with Norman D’Arcy of Home Mead, Brisbane, Queensland, who exhibited champion dogs at the 1872 Agricultural Society Show and is listed among the Governors and Members of the Society in the front of the catalogue. Norman D’Arcy was possibly the father of W. D’Arcy, Miss D’Arcy and Miss E. D’Arcy , who all came from Queensland and exhibited with the NSW Academy of Art in the Fine Art section of the same show.
