Painter, joined Sir John Longstaff in living and working in a studio at Elizabeth Bay House in the 1930s after the house had been purchased by the Bank of New Zealand (in 1932) and before it was converted into 16 'bed-sit’ flats furnished with antiques (in 1941). A photograph of Thornton painting in his Elizabeth Bay House studio was published in the Sydney Morning Herald in July 1935 (reproduced insites winter 2003, p.6). He and Wolfgang Cardamatis , another young studio occupant, were renowned for the fabulous parties they held there.
