DAAO Links policy
Criteria for Inclusion of Information Links from the Dictionary of Australian Artists Online.
DAAO partners, other organisations or individuals may request the DAAO to link to websites that they compile, publish or manage.
Before the DAAO includes a ‘related link’ the target website will be evaluated for relevance and quality. The decision for inclusion will be made by the DAAO Editorial Team in consultation with the Editorial Board where appropriate.
Evaluation criteria are given below.
Evaluation Criteria for Linked Websites
This is a brief list of criteria and guidelines to assist in the selection of quality websites to be linked from DAAO pages. Evaluation criteria include: Relevance; Authority; Purpose, Focus and Bias; Accuracy; Currency; and Ease of Use, Navigation and Accessibility.
Relevance
- The candidate website should offer pertinent information about Australian artists, their lives or works
Note: Information regarding the criteria for inclusion on the site and who
qualifies as an Australian artist can be found here in the DAAO Contributor Guidelines
Authority
- The persons/organisation responsible for the content should be clearly identified
- The qualifications or credentials of the author(s) should be stated and/or verifiable
- The website should be clearly labelled with the name of the owner or sponsor of the site, and their contact details
- A copyright statement indicating the copyright owner of the content should appear on each page
Note: Authoritative sources include websites produced, hosted or sponsored by a DAAO partner; an Australian Commonwealth, State or Territory government agency, or government-funded/sponsored art gallery; an Australian university; overseas government agencies and universities. However, such websites should still satisfy evaluation criteria for relevance, accuracy and currency.
Commercial, community or cooperative websites may be linked if they are reputable organisations, add additional information to that presented in the DAAO itself, and satisfy the evaluation criteria.
Personal websites (e.g. of artists) may be linked if they satisfy the evaluation criteria.
Purpose, Focus and Bias
- The purpose of the site should be clearly stated
- The intended audience should be prominently indicated or apparent from the statement of purpose
- Any advertising or promotional material should be clearly distinguishable from information content
- If the site presents opinion, the opinions should be credited (i.e., not anonymous)
- There should be no bias but if there is it should be clearly indicated

Accuracy
- The content should be well-written, readable and presented in logical order
- There should be no spelling or grammatical errors
- The content of the website should be accurate and verifiable in other sources or by experts
- Sources of information should be cited when/where appropriate
Note: Content on DAAO partner websites and from other authoritative sources (see Authority above) is considered to be accurate.
Currency
- The information should be current and regularly updated (date of latest update should be indicated on each page)
- Each page should indicate when the content was compiled or last revised
- Links on the pages should work
Ease of Use, Navigation and Accessibility
- The site’s URL should be (relatively) stable
- The page download time should be reasonable (i.e., not more than 10 seconds)
- The site should be navigation friendly with aids such as search; alphabetical index; site map; breadcrumbs; navigation bars on each page; help and documentation; link to Home on each page
- The website should be consistent in presentation of content, in use of colour, and in style and size of fonts and icons
- When content items require special software (eg, Adobe Reader) to open and use them, the reader should be informed of this and provided with links to software download sites
- If access to the site content is restricted (eg to subscribers), this should be clearly indicated, with information on fees and charges
- The site should accommodate use by different browser software (eg, Internet Explorer, Firefox)
- The site should ideally provide text equivalents to visual and auditory contents and make its content accessible to people with disabilities. i.e., Does the site follow the W3C Accessibility Guidelines.
