Painter, was born in Goulburn, NSW. He studied art part time at J.S. Watkins’s art school in Sydney in 1939-40 before serving in Australia and New Guinea during WWII. After the war, he studied at East Sydney Technical College as part of the Commonwealth Rehabilitation Scheme (1947-49) then went to England where he studied part-time at the Chelsea School of Art and the Central School of Arts and Crafts, London. In 1966-73 he was a part-time lecturer in the School of Architecture at the University of Sydney and in the Department of Industrial Design, UNSW, then was appointed inaugural Director of the University of Sydney Art Workshop (1973-76). From 1976 to 1985 he was Principal Lecturer and Head of Painting at Sydney College of the Arts, then Visiting Lecturer in Art History at the Faculty of Architecture (SU 1986-87) and Lecturer in Postgraduate Studies at College of Fine Arts (1986-88). He held Australia Council studio residencies in New York (1982-83) and Paris (1990). Since 1992 he has been Director of the University of Wollongong Art Collection.
