painter and sketcher. From the start of his art training at the Victorian College of the Arts between 1977 and 1982, Miller “eschewed the fashions of the time, sticking doggedly to portraits and nudes while other students were working with postmodernism and conceptualism…” according to the Age’s Ashley Crawford.

Miller explained to Crawford in 2003 that “Anyone could slave over a photograph and make an exact likeness. Portraiture is a funny thing. It’s all about making a good oil painting.”

Miller won the Hugh Ramsay Portrait Prize in 1982, the Archibald Prize in 1998; and the Daily Telegraph’s Olympic-themed, Archibald-linked, Sporting Portrait Prize in 2000. In 2003 he was appointed an official war artist in Iraq.
