Professional photographer and miner, ran a photographic business in the 1850s, acquiring Saul Solomon's reputed collection of 17,000 glass plate negatives in the process. Smith and his brother produced a series of local shots under the title 'Photographs of our village' for the Ballarat Mechanics Institute Exhibition in 1869.
