professional photographer, exhibited 'a group of theatrical portraits’, including a photograph of the tragedian Gustavus Vaughan Brooke, with the Victorian Society of Fine Arts in 1857. After being listed in Melbourne directories at Collins Street East in 1857-59 Phillips disappeared from Melbourne until 1867-68, then was at 88 Collins Street, Fitzroy. He may therefore be the photographer Phillips who was taking photographs at Perth (WA) in 1866, perhaps en route to Melbourne after a return trip home.
