Anthony White painter, draughtsman and sculptor was born in Sydney 1976.
His early youth was spent in the Shoalhaven area of New South Wales. Early in his career he trained as a chef and spent time working on the northern beaches of Sydney.
Anthony White studied the visual arts at the National Art school, 2003-2005 BFA, Sydney, under Aida Tomescu. During this time he became associated with the contemporary Australian visual artists Giles Alexander, Guy Maestri, Dale Miles, Leslie Rice, Silke Raetze and Judy Garb Weiss.
During the years 2007-2010 he travelled extensively on artist in residency programmes. The Vermont Studio Centre (2008), La Cite Internationale Des Arts with support from the FONAS/Storrier Onslow Studio (2009) and the Leipzig International Art Programme (2010) Germany,
Between 2007 and 2008 he furthered his visual arts education in New York, receiving a grant to study at The New York Studio School’s Drawing Marathon Programme.
At the end of 2009 Anthony White immigrated to France , met his partner whilst on a residency programme and subsequently had a son. At this time he became influenced by ideas of the street art movement by being exposed to a vibrant street art scene.
White’s work draws from his response to the Australian landscape and urban environment. His work is characterised by an awareness of surface and a preoccupation with the engagement of physicality and the exploration of the resonance of the found object. He is influenced by references from the New York School of the 1950’s The Merzbau project of the artist Kurt Schwitters, the De Stijl movement and the combines of Robert Rauschenberg.
Anthony White has been a finalist in many Australian art prizes including twice in The Churchie National Emerging Art Prize, The Brett Whiteley Travelling Scholarship 2006, The Norvill Art Prize 2005,The Willoughby City Art Prize 2005, The Hills Grammar Art Prize 2005 and The Paddington Art Prize 2005.
Anthony White was the recipient of The Marten Bequest 2007,The Elioth Gruner Prize for Landscape Painting Art Gallery of NSW 2005 and The Great Southland Art Prize for Landscape Painting.
He has produced a number of solo exhibitions, Paris Paintings (2010), Scratching The Surface (2011) both at Iain Dawson Gallery Sydney and Informal Relations at The Cat St Gallery, Hong Kong (2013)
His work is held in private collections in Sydney, Paris, Tokyo, New York, London and Brisbane
