sketcher, natural historian and surgeon, made a trip around the world on board the Walter Hood in 1862, arriving at Sydney on 17 September and remaining in New South Wales until 12 December. He recorded in his journal: 'I spent my time studying Natural History and collecting specimens in the vicinity of Port Jackson, Kurrajong, Mount Tomah, Wollongong, Mount Kera [Keira], and the Bulli range’. His journal (Mitchell Library) contains pen sketches of botanical and entomological specimens, probably done on the spot, together with tipped-in wash drawings of bush vistas of which some at least were executed later (one is dated 21 June 1863). Lowne, a member of the Royal College of Surgeons, wrote and illustrated a scientific paper on Australian ants, published in two parts in the 1865 Entomologist .
