Clara Bate (nee Hughes), 1859-1914, was born in Bathurst, NSW. The daughter of a farmer she married Frank Picton Bate in 1865. Bate made a double sized quilt, which she worked on throughout her life. The quilt was finished in 1915 by her sister and has been passed on through generations of the Hughes family. The quilt has been donated to the Powerhouse Museum.
Clara Bate (nee Hughes) b.1859 to John and Annie Hughes. John Hughes was farmer who originally resided in the Bathurst region, but later moved to Ginkin. Clara married Frank Picton Bate in 1884 and moved to his property, 'Frankfort’. The couple established a guesthouse at 'Frankfort’ which was located close to the Jenolan Caves.
Bate worked on a quilt c.1890-1914 when she died. Her sister, Emma completed the quilt in 1915. The double size quilt was passed on through generations of the Hughes family.
The quilt has been donated to the Powerhouse Museum.
