Dorothy Stoner supported her career as an artist by teaching art in Tasmania, but she constantly looked to Melbourne, Sydney and Europe for new ways of thinking about art. Along with Edith Holmes, Florence Rodway and Mildred Lovett she was one of a group of Tasmanian women artists achieving well out of the public eye in the first half of the 20th century
