Marrying a Church of England clergyman, Ellen shared the views of the then strongly evangelical colony of South Australia. She was the director of St Paul's Guild of Embroiderers and won recognition for her work.

embroiderer, was the daughter of Rev. Edward Bayfield (the late nineteenth-century English still-life painter Fanny Jane Bayfield was possibly a relative).
