Watercolorist, tempera and black and white artist who may have been a graphic artist at the Western Mail. In 1933 Len Cutten, L. Renzow and F. J. Leigh had a three-man exhibition at Newspaper House Gallery in Perth. In the introduction by John McLeod he described them as “three young artists resident in Perth. Their efforts have the merit of a right beginning, inasmuch as they represent sincere attempts to fix in artistic terms their impressions of life, colour, and movement as they find them in their daily environment. The show is salted by further essays in imaginative composition and design.” They were all part-time painters with other professions. It is possible Leigh had served in World War I as his subjects included “Gallipoli”, “Egypt”, “Minarets” and “Prisoners-Serapeum”. The pictures were hung unframed as they explained in their catalogue: “The modern technique of Home Decoration utilizes pictures as accents, the framing being carried out in harmony with the general decorative scheme. Our hostess will be happy, should you so desire, to suggest a frame that will enhance the charm of any picture, yet blend satisfactorily with your existing home setting.” The hostess was Leigh’s wife.
