cartoonist and helicopter pilot, was born in Peru of Swiss parents. He was educated in Switzerland, where he trained as a draughtsman. He later learned to fly fixed wing aircraft in the USA. Stahle came to Australia in 1983 and became a chopper pilot working on stations across the North. In 1988, when mustering at Vergemont Station, 150 kms west of Longreach, he illustrated Dark Endeavour (Edgecliff NSW: Cullen Publications, 1988), a satiric history of Australia written by Jim Hilferty, a helicopter engineer who lived in Sydney with his wife and four children when not working in the bush (and was then also working on a film with an outback theme). Images in the book include convicts being fumigated on arrival in Australia, and Aboriginal subjects.
