George A. Baker

painter, was one of the eight children of the South Australian pastoralist and parliamentarian John Baker (1813-72) and Isabella née Allan. At the 1864 exhibition of the South Australian Society of Arts Baker won the prize 'for the best oil painting, original or copy, by a native of the province’. The South Australian Advertiser noted that the work was a copy, 'but however that may be, it has been perseveringly and carefully painted’. The following year he again received the prize for the best oil painting by a native South Australian. On both occasions his father had donated the 3-guinea prize to the society.
