sketcher and naval officer, was a lieutenant on the Wilkes round-the-world exploration expedition from North America in 1838. Brosse states that at Sydney in 1839 Emmons made a wash drawing of three Aborigines titled King Zeapot [sic] and his Two Wives (Beinecke Library, Yale University) and this seems to have been incorporated into the expedition’s collections as an original view of the Aborigines of New South Wales. It is, in fact, a copy of an 1837 caricature, drawn and lithographed by T.B. , titled King Teapot and his Two Gins, Chief of the Bogan Tribe, N.S. Wales. As he Appeared after Having a Tightner – presumably a souvenir purchased in Sydney.
Emmons had a distinguished naval career in both the Mexican and Civil wars and claimed new territories for the United States in Alaska. He was made admiral in 1872 and died at Princeton in 1884.
