painter, received a land grant in Sydney in 1825 and is known to have died in 1888. Hoile’s oil on artist board Cockatoo Island , signed and dated 1855, was offered for auction at Sotheby’s 'Fine Australian and European Paintings’, Melbourne, 28-29 April 1998, lot 282, having previously appeared at Christie’s London, February 1973. Another artist named Hoile appears to have worked into the 20th century.
