Painter, sculptor and teacher, his work was presented in two retrospectives, in 1985 at the AGWA, and from 2003-06 at ten-venue organised by the MCA and AGWA. He received the Emeritus Award from the Visual Arts Board of the Australia Council in 1986; Member Order of Australia, 1989; Hon. Doctor of Letters, UWA, 1993; Hon. Doctor of Technology, Curtin University, 1997; and 'State Treasure' Western Australia 1999.
