sketcher and merchant seaman, was second mate on board the migrant ship Hope , which arrived at Melbourne on 15 March 1853. His album of pencil sketches drawn in Australian waters (ML) includes views of Hobson’s Bay dated March, April and October 1853. The Hope left Melbourne in mid 1854 in company with the Sarah Ann of Glasgow and headed home via the Torres Strait. Pendered sketched many islands in these waters, including Strait Rock to which he appended the comments: 'a small rock, awash, bears from it NNW 1 mile; upon which we only escaped from striking by putting the helm “hard a port”!!!’ He apparently left the Hope at Ceylon (Sri Lanka). His final sketch in the album is signed 'J.C. Pendered, 1st officer, ship Pioneer of Baltimore '.
