James A. Read
Artist (Painter)
J. T. Read's career as a professional artist is questionable because his paintings are stylistically indistinguishable from portraits by the artist Richard Read Junior.
painter, was listed in the catalogue of the 1849 exhibition of the Society for the Promotion of the Fine Arts in Australia as a practising artist of 16 Jamison Street, Sydney. Portraits in the Mitchell Library, such as the watercolours of Rev. Samuel Marsden (1833) and his daughter Jane, Mrs Thomas Marsden , annotated (but not by the artist) 'By J. Read’ and 'J. Read’ respectively, are stylistically indistinguishable from portraits by Richard Read junior to whom they are now generally attributed, despite the mysterious catalogue address and initials.
