Waite's oil paintings now sell for respectable prices, his notoriety in large part due to his being a contemporary of the Boer War. His work provides historical insight into the climate of the time, particularly as he worked commercially as an illustrator.

His (very English) oil on canvas, Midday Snooze n.d., was auctioned by Christie’s on 14-15 August 1994, lot 211 (ill.), while the equally European oil on canvas, The Fortune Teller , was offered at Sotheby’s Melbourne on 9 May 2003 (lot 167, 74 × 61 cm, ill., est. $12,000-$16,000). A signed oil on board of two dogs fighting, Love and Strife , was attributed to him when offered at Sotheby’s Fine Australian and European Paintings , Melbourne, 28-29 April 1998, lot 294. He probably illustrated two postcards issued in Colmar, Alsace, in 1901 in aid of the Boers [sic], one showing a nurse comforting a Boer soldier signed 'James Waite’ and the other a nurse paying homage to Louis Botha signed with a 'JW’ monogram.
