This oil on canvas, signed 'James Peele 1901’, was lot 112 at Christie’s Australian and European Paintings, Sculpture, Drawings and Prints, Part I & II, Melbourne 25-26 November 1997 (ill.). 'A late brown colonial view of Perth, 49 cm by 89 cm by James Peele, sold for $38,500’ at Gregson Flanagan’s art sale in Perth in May 1999: 'It was secured by Ms Louise Wordsworth, a member of an old Esperance farming family, against competition from Mr Kim Clifton, a local property investor, for more than three times the estimate’ (Terry Ingram, 'Sales highlight our booming art market’, Australian Financial Review 13 May 1999, 37).
