Kerr was a lieutenant in the Royal Scots Lothian Regiment when he travelled on a voyage to South Africa, Australia, the Pacific and India with Lord Henry Scott and the Reverend Henry Stobart. All three travelling companions sketched on the journey though most of the surviving drawings are attributed to Lord Henry.
