Baas was a flower painter who exhibited with the Royal Art Society of New South Wales in 1886. A later exhibition in 1890 drew the attention of both the Sydney Morning Herald and the Illustrated Sydney News.

Exhibition at Messrs Callan’s: “A still-life study, 'Roses’, by Miss Marie Baass, is worthy of mention” (Sydney Morning Herald 10 April 1890, p.3). “Miss Baas also exhibits flower paintings of much more than average merit” (Illustrated Sydney News 1 May 1890, p.19).
