woodblock artist, woodcarver and pastry cook, was an accomplished amateur whittler who carved both functional and decorative butter pats and moulds for his shop at Hamilton, Victoria. He also cut and engraved many woodblocks, including one for a poster, To the Carnival , advertising a local event in 1880 (National Gallery of Australia, woodcut 31.4 × 70.4 cm, gift of Murray Walker 1985, ill. Butler, 7).
