Flood trained as an artist, worked with Alan Caiger-Smith UK, Royal Delft Pottery Netherlands, and in Australia, David Boyd & John Perceval. Returned to Australia from Netherlands ca.1962. Exhibits thrown functional wares & sculpture. He also had an extensive career as an educator. Artist in Residence, Dublin. President, Victorian Ceramic Group, 1973.

Noel Flood was represented in the 'Australian Ceramics’ exhibition, touring of State and regional galleries 1974-1976 (organised by Australian Gallery Directors’ Conference). In 1977, now head of Ceramics at Melbourne State College, he held a two-person show with fellow staff member John Teschendorff that mocked the view of pottery as craft at 'Art of Man Gallery’.

While Noel enjoyed throwing & producing functional forms, he is probably best known as a sculptor, with audiences not always sure what to make of his challenging female figures. In 1981 (James Joyce’s centenary year), on sabbatical as artist-in-residence at the National College of Art and Design, Dublin, he produced a body of work entitled “The Private Parts of James Joyce’s Women”. He was elected president of the Victorian Ceramic Group in 1973.

In the 1980s, Flood advised and collaborated with Wally Curran @ Australasian Meat Industry Employees Union, Vic.
