Mawson was a student of Walter Rowbotham at the Perth Technical School. In 1949 he exhibited two watercolours with the West Australian Society of Arts, The Veteran and Subiaco. In 1949 he also submitted an oil painting, River Foreshore, in the Claude Hotchin Art Prize and in 1952 he submitted the works At Pelican Point and The Path Through the Bush – Hollywood. In 1956 he exhibited three watercolours with the West Australian Society of Arts.
