Stuart's artistic career had a most novel beginning. As he recuperated in hospital from a broken leg, following a dare devil escapade on a horse,he sketched a steeplechase on his plaster cast.

painter, black and white artist and station owner, was nicknamed 'Long Dick Stuart’ after he came to Queensland as a young man. Eventually he became proprietor of Mitchell Downs station. Moore states that he was 'said to have rivalled Adam Lindsay Gordon’ in equestrian daring and hairbreadth escapes and he began his artistic career in hospital, sketching a steeplechase with charcoal on the plaster of a broken leg. He was one of the first contributors to Queensland Figaro (published 1883-1936), usually sending bush scenes. He exhibited with the QNA in 1886.
