painter and photographer, came to Melbourne in 1857 and was employed in a photographic studio. Exhibited Victorian Academy of Arts from 1878 and Victorian Artists’ Society until 1892. Moved to Bendigo and opened a photographic studio. Has 6 water colours in Bendigo Art Gallery (McCulloch, Artists of the Australian Gold Rush).

Melbourne International Exhibition 1880: Victoria – Paintings and Drawings Exhibited by the Victorian Academy of Arts – Oil Paintings – Bugg, R.W. – no.2 Going Free.

Competition organised by John Sands for a distinctly Australian design to be reproduced as a Christmas card: “No.589, Robert William Bugg, Collins Street, Melbourne Port Lonsdale, Port Phillip“ (Sydney Morning Herald, 23 May 1881, p.5).

Exhibited at Australian Artists Association (Vic) in winter and summers exhibitions 1887.

Exhibited in the Melbourne Centennial International Exhibition 1888-9, Victorian Artists’ Gallery (Watercolours) no.141 Near Toorak.

Listed in Sands 1889.

Exhibition at Athenaeum Hall in March 1922.
