Putnam first joined the DIA (IDCA) in 1972 and was awarded a DIA Fellowship in the early 2000s. He designed furniture for Kerby Furniture, establishing hs own firm Sumna Furniture in Victoria. He also worked with Kjell Grant developing furniture prototypes and late in his career became involved in museum exhibition work,
