naval artist, was draughtsman on board the 1836-39 Venus expedition to the South Pacific, commanded by Captain Abel Aubert du Petit-Thouars and ordered by King Louis Philippe (partly to obtain formal submission of Tahiti to France from Queen Pomare IV). The Venus visited Sydney in November-December 1838 after the mission to Tahiti but the only Australian subject in the Atlas Pittoresque (Paris 1841) which accompanied Thouars’s official account of the voyage is a lithograph after Ménard’s drawing Vue de la Rade de Sydney et du Fort Macquarie, Nlle Holland (1838). The illustration shows several sailors standing on Observatory Hill looking at Sydney Cove; Fort Macquarie is shown on Bennelong Point, and South Head with its lighthouse can be seen in the distance.
