Tara Marynowsky, painter and mixed media artist, was born in Sydney in 1979. Marynowsky studied fine arts at the College of Fine Arts, University of New South Wales, where she attained a Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honours in 2002.
Marynowsky’s paintings possess qualities of intimacy, fragility and otherworldliness. Her first solo exhibition at the Chalk Horse Gallery in 2010, 'Gods and Monsters’, was inspired by her mother’s collection of Man, Myth and Magic encyclopaedia magazine (ca. 1970). In this watercolour series Marynowsky chose to focus upon otherworldly matters and beings with an emphasis on adornment and costume, depicting amateur theatricals, sporting clubs, vagabonds and pageantry gatherings with nostalgic vision and fondness. Through her own interpretations of these curious creatures, her work portrays the way different cultures create mythological beings. Marynowsky’s playful technique masks these powerful and mysterious themes. As she has stated, “Masking a character’s face explores power and the power of play. In some works the use of a mask is linked to a spiritual presence” (pers. comm.).
Marynowsky has exhibited individually and in group shows both in Australia and internationally. Her solo exhibitions include 'I Really Like What You’ve Done To Me’ (2007) at the Kings Artist Run Initiative, Melbourne, and the aforementioned 'Gods and Monsters’ at the Chalk Horse Gallery, Sydney. In addition, she has participated in the following group exhibitions: 'Untitled’ (2009), 'Chalk Reindeer’ (2008), 'Great Whites & Tan Lines & Tales’ (2008) at the Chalk Horse Gallery; 'Hiakus’ (2009) at the Pompidou Centre, Paris; 'Videoformes’ (2007, 2008) in Clermont-Ferrand, France; the International Festival of Video art of Casablanca (2007) in Morocco; the SinCity Pompidou film program (2007) at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, Melbourne; the International Festival of Videoart of Valencia (2006) in Valencia, Spain; the Hart Centre for the Arts (2006) in Beijing, China; 'About Studio’ (2006) at Pomprab, Bangkok, Thailand; the Cockatoo Island Festival (2005) in Sydney; and 'Dissonance: Contemporary Feminist Perspectives’ (1999) at Kudos Gallery, Sydney.
In 2006 Marynowsky was the recipient of the RUN_WAY Australia Council Inter-Arts grant and in 2010 her work was displayed in the shop window of Incu as part of Art Month Sydney. Her works are held in a number of private collections as well as at Freshwater Place, Melbourne.
