decorative artists and teachers, conducted a Ladies’ Seminary at Sydney in 1843 which offered 'every indispensable and necessary branch of Education, with the useful branches of work, ornamental Painting on Glass, Crystal Baskets, Tinting, Artificial Fruits, &c.’ for 20 guineas a year (washing, French, music and dancing extra). In the early years boys were also enrolled; there were six boys and eighteen girls on the rolls in 1847. By 1849 girls only were accepted and more 'refined’ accomplishments were being emphasised. By then their father, Thomas Dodd, was co-proprietor of the establishment.
