painter, is known only as the artist of the unlocated Portrait of Mr Menge, who was an eccentric geologist who lived in a cave near Rowland’s Flat in the Barossa Valley, South Australia, called the area New Silesia and proposed that a university be established there. Wetzel exhibited his portrait of Menge at the 1848 Adelaide Exhibition of Colonial Artists.
