wood engraver and illustrator, is listed as a wood-engraver in Sands Sydney Directory for 1867. William Hoddle was the 'first Australian illustrator’ according to A. J. Fischer , who lent a portrait Hoddle had done of him to the National Art Gallery of NSW Loan Exhibition of Australian Art, Sydney, 1918, cat. 332.
