Known as an amateur photographer, illustrator and craft teacher, Hilliard authored and illustrated "The People in Between: The Pitjantijatjara People of Ernabella" in 1968. She was a major figure in establishing the "Craft Room" at the Presbyterian Ernebella mission, South Australia, later known as Ernabella Arts.
