Works on paper artist David Fairbairn was born in 1949 in Zambia, Africa, and came to Australia in the late 1970s.

Fairbairn has exhibited numerous times in the Dobell Drawing Prize. In 2007 he was awarded the Willoughby Art Award for Works on Paper and in 2006 he was awarded the Calleen Acquisitive Award. He also won Art on the Rocks in 2003, The Doug Moran National Portrait Prize in 2002, The Dobell Drawing Prize in 1999, The Fishers Ghost Open Art Prize and Conrad Jupiters Purchase Prize in 1997, The Landseer Prize and David Murray Landscape Scholarship at the Royal Academy in 1975 and 1976 respectively, as well as over forty other prizes and awards since 1981.

Fairbairn is represented in many collections including the Doug Moran Art Foundation Collection, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Myers Art Foundation, Faber-Castell Drawing Collection, University of New England, University of Western Sydney, Wollongong University Collection, State Bank, Latrobe Valley Arts Centre, Gold Coast City Art Gallery, Cowra Regional Art Gallery and Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority.
