Torres Strait Islander, Rosie Barkus was born in 1959 and lives on Thursday Island in the Torres Strait. Barkus is a self taught lino-block textile designer working professionally since 1996. She also employs the techniques of lino-cut and screen-printing. Barkus is quoted in the catalogue of “Gatherings, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art From Queensland Australia” as saying, “My work reflects the vibrant, natural beauty of the Torres Strait and its rich cultural history and tropical island lifestyle.” She has been included in a number of key exhibitions including the 1999/2000 touring exhibition, “Ilan Pasin” which showed showed in Queensland, Victoria, NSW, SA and Canberra.
